On this episode of Bible Bros and Brew. We're continuing our journey through the book of 2 Peter, chapter 1, and we've been on this journey for a good minute. We've been talking about how to keep from falling and we went over the list of seven virtues that Peter talked about in 2 Peter, chapter 1. And we're actually I believe we're going to be able to conclude the series this time around on this episode, so it's going to be a good one. Stay tuned.
David McIntyre:That's a bop right there. This song, this track, is a bop. It's got that mojo. It does that mojo back when I was 23 oh sorry, see, back in the day when I was young. I'm not a kid anymore. Oh gosh, this is gonna be a special episode.
Phillip Rich:We do not have it together oh man, welcome everyone to this episode of Bible Bros and Brew. My name is Philip and of course with me I have David right here. Ryan, further that way and uh we are. We are concluding, I guess. I guess it's going to be the conclusion, david, we're concluding. I guess it's going to be the conclusion, david. We're concluding our series on Famous last words.
David McIntyre:I know famous last words too. I think we really will conclude this time. Possibly we might get through half of one verse in an hour, hit a gusher, as the old folks used to say.
Phillip Rich:We're going to hit. A gusher Up from the ground, come a bubbling crew. A gusher Up from the ground, come above a creep.
David McIntyre:A gusher, a gusher.
Phillip Rich:Sorry, oh my goodness. Sorry, man, you got me with that one Okay. But yes, we've been talking about 2 Peter, chapter 1. We've been on a series called how to Keep from Falling and we've been talking about what Peter said in 2 Peter 1, when he listed different virtues or qualities that you can add to your faith, and he mentioned virtues like knowledge and temperance and self-control, patience. He went down a whole list of things to add to your faith and he said if you start walking in these things, diligently applying these things, then eventually, over time, it would build God's character and nature into you to the point, according to what Peter said, that you will never fall.
Phillip Rich:Now and I'm talking never. So if I'm been, if I've been given a biblical prescription to never fall, I want to know what that is. You know, I want to study that out and make sure that I'm following it because I don't want to fall. You know we've been talking about different things that have happened in the body of Christ and, I guess, mainly the evangelical industrial complex as well. Different prominent Christian leaders, big time famous musicians in the Christian world, who we've been finding out lately have either been living double lives where the second life that's been off camera and off, you know, out of public view has been one full of sin and debauchery, uh. Also, we've heard different stories of pastors and leaders who have been uh on the slides sexually abusing people and and just all kinds of stuff and you wonder, as I often have, it's like how in the world did they, how did how did this happen?
Phillip Rich:Because one thing I think we can all agree on is that it wasn't something that came out of nowhere. More than likely it was something that developed over time, some level of uh, I guess unrepented sin or unrepented of sin I guess that's the way you'd put it or something to where you weren't dealing with certain things that maybe some temptations of the flesh that you never put down or things that you never could conquer in your life, as far as sinful desires go or evil desires go, and the Bible says in Proverbs 28 I think it's probably 28 it says he that covers his sins will not prosper. But if you, but if you confess them and forsake them, you'll have mercy. So we see, a lot of times we have people who I think may be out of fear or embarrassment or whatever the case is, they would rather or they would feel more comfortable covering the sin, covering for the sin, excusing away the sin, and then all it does is snowball into something worse and worse and worse. The next thing, you know, they're falling into a level that maybe they weren't even doing before they got saved. You know so and Peter talked about that in second Peter as well. He said sometimes, when these people get entangled again in the things that they were delivered out of, the latter end for them is worse than the beginning. And I think, david, you mentioned last week or whatever, that analogy about the dog returning to its vomit. You know, that's pretty much the comparison that the Bible gives of somebody who once was walking with the Lord, you know, tasted the fruits of salvation and then all of a sudden, for whatever reason, they begin falling away and now, next thing you know, they're in a place that maybe they didn't even hit before they got saved Just worse and more intense and more pronounced, and everything else like that.
Phillip Rich:Anyway, I know I'm saying a lot right now in the intro, but that's where we've been and if you want, please do yourself a favor, check out the past episodes that we've done on this, all the series that are labeled how to Keep From Falling. I think we actually have a playlist on our channel for this particular series, so check that that out. Make sure you like this, subscribe, as always. I'll just throw that in there, but, um, anyway, before we get any further, I do want to go ahead and do our famous uh question that we always ask here on bible growth group, and that is, of course, what is in the cup. So, ryan, please let us know what's in your cup, sir.
Ryan Holdeman:Yo yo All right, Well, tonight.
David McIntyre:Before you go, just Philip, you got something lucky happening with your microphone. Just check that real quick.
Phillip Rich:Thank you, sir, will do.
Ryan Holdeman:Check it out.
Phillip Rich:Check one two. Check one two.
Ryan Holdeman:Uh-oh, I don't know, you may not speak the words of life, ryan, okay.
Phillip Rich:Oh, you know what it is. I've been on the wrong mic the whole time. Okay, how do I sound now?
David McIntyre:Oh yeah, that's great.
Phillip Rich:My goodness had no clue. I was on the wrong one. Okay, good to go, okay.
Ryan Holdeman:Well, I've got an. I don't the wrong one. Okay, good to go. Well, I've got an. I don't have Pete's.
David McIntyre:So Thank you, Jesus.
Ryan Holdeman:It's jacked up Dude. I did decide to try a new little brand here. It's called Cambino, and they use these. A new little brand here, it's called Cambino. They use these. They're not using plastic K-Cups, they're using these aluminum K-Cups.
Phillip Rich:They look cool they do look cool.
Ryan Holdeman:It's like this. I don't know. It doesn't really translate over the camera. I don't think it looks like little trash cans Like.
Phillip Rich:Oscar's home on Sesame.
Ryan Holdeman:Street right a little ASMR here oh gosh, please don't do that.
Phillip Rich:You ever seen those people that rat-a-tat-tat with their fingernails on the I can't stand that it's so aggravating and we're gonna taste it out of curiosity.
Ryan Holdeman:why do they? I can't understand that. It's so aggravating. It is so aggravating and we're going to taste it.
David McIntyre:Yeah, Out of curiosity, why do they whisper If it's an ASMR thing? Why not just talk and have your voice be heard, Right? Because they like to hear themselves talk and they think that they're cool.
Ryan Holdeman:It's so creepy, so it's a very eco-friendly coffee Pretty good. It's not creepy, so it's a very eco-friendly coffee Pretty good. It's not my favorite, but the packaging was cool and I thought I'd give it a try.
Phillip Rich:Hey man, nothing wrong with taking that leap.
Ryan Holdeman:Yeah, I took the leap and I probably won't take it again. Oh.
Phillip Rich:So I'm assuming it's not really on the level of a pizza or anything like that it's just not as strong, but I do have some.
David McIntyre:I put it on ice gotcha cool beans ladies and gentlemen, first of all, thanks for joining us. It's an auspicious occasion. Yes, it is A few weeks ago we made a quality decision that all fall beverages would wait, but as you can see according to the timer on the clock, that time has come to an end.
Phillip Rich:Yes.
David McIntyre:And I'm proud to be drinking my first fall beverage.
Phillip Rich:Oh yes.
David McIntyre:Ladies and gentlemen, my favorite pumpkin spice. Pumpkin spice from Black Rifle Coffee Company. Ooh the.
Phillip Rich:Headless.
David McIntyre:Horseman yeah, this is again as you've heard me say before. If you've followed us for any period of time, it's a fantastic cup of coffee. Nice I also added just a little bit of ground cinnamon to it just to spice up the fall in the cup. I just want you to know that I'm really happy.
Phillip Rich:Yes, just want you to know that.
David McIntyre:I'm really happy and I'm going to be doing maple bourbons and some other stuff over the fall season because I'm letting it all hang loose, and may all the leaves fall all over me as I partake in this fall joy.
Phillip Rich:Yes, so I'm assuming this makes you feel very conversational tonight it makes me feel extremely conversational and it makes me happy. That's good.
David McIntyre:And if you heard the pre-show you'd know I need happy right now.
Phillip Rich:Yes, yes, well, I'm glad that the cup can provide that extra blessing for you, man, it's just joy.
David McIntyre:And then I'll just also say the weather here is so, fall it is it's dope yeah. It's just. Everything is together. The leaves are starting to drop a little bit, it's just so fall. The Lord's put it all together and it's marvelous.
Phillip Rich:Yeah yeah. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year. Dude Hands down. It's like that's the one for me.
David McIntyre:I agree. Fall with Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Phillip Rich:Hallmark situation.
David McIntyre:Right.
Phillip Rich:Right. As for me, I've got my famous decaf tonight. I didn't want to get too geeked up, as I've been before many times on this podcast, but yes, I've got the Guatemala Alma decaf. It has been my favorite decaf as of late. Notes of sticky toffee, pudding, sweet cream and milk chocolate.
David McIntyre:Yes. Yes, it is quite tough Sticky toffee pudding is awfully specific.
Phillip Rich:I'm amazed at how these guys can find these very specific notes in these coffees. Man, it's funny because I believe most of the time they nail it dude. I believe they really do.
David McIntyre:It's interesting. It's interesting. I would like to bring something to the team.
Phillip Rich:Please do.
David McIntyre:I would recommend everybody bring a fall beverage to our next filming.
Phillip Rich:Oh yeah.
David McIntyre:So that we can all partake of fall together. It'll be a beautiful day outside, I'm sure, and we'll have fall in our cups and it'll be wonderful and we won't tell John, so he'll bring some other janky coffee.
Phillip Rich:Oh man, the joke's on him.
David McIntyre:Indeed it is.
Phillip Rich:He'll find out. But yeah, man, I gotta say this too, man, there's a lot of like I said, that's Georgia, Absolutely. You got to love Georgia man. True, but a lot of why, or a lot of how I enjoy my coffee, or the degree that I enjoy my coffee, depends on what I'm eating with it. Dude, like I got to have the right pairing, you know what I mean.
David McIntyre:Right right.
Phillip Rich:So I wanted to say that, in light of something that happened this past weekend, right, we went to the Peachtree City Farmer's Market, it's like right about 15 minutes from the house, and there was this lady there. She had a little stand and it was called Granny B's Biscotti, right? Oh so yeah, dude, so I wasn't thinking I would like biscotti, because I've had biscotti before. You know how it's really like rock hard and it's too crunchy. Yeah, to me it is. You know, dude, this woman, she killed it.
Phillip Rich:She has like we bought some lemon cranberry biscotti and then there's some chocolate almond biscotti brah. When I, when I hooked up a cup of the peregrine and had the lemon cranberries biscotti dude, I was like the rapture could happen today and I would have fulfilled my call. My calling an election would have been sure. So shout out to Granny B, wherever she might be living she's the goat of biscotti. In my view, her biscotti wasn't super hard. Look at that, look at ryan.
David McIntyre:Yes, yes, sir like scroll down okay yeah, grammy b.
Phillip Rich:Sorry, I thought it was granny, but it's with the m's.
David McIntyre:Grammy b yeah, we see you, grammy.
Phillip Rich:We we appreciate your sponsorship yes, yes, we want you to know that we see you and we hear you. You have been seen, but that's her right there Look at Grammy. Yeah, she's cool, she's really cool, sweet southern belle. But she said her kids actually are the ones that kind of prodded her into doing it, like they bought the domain name for her or something like that, and they're like Grammy, go ahead and do your business. So she just started doing it. Man, really cool story.
David McIntyre:Good For those of you who don't know, that's part two of our biscotti discussion. Please see last week's episode for part one of biscotti. No, no.
Phillip Rich:I believe what we're going to do tonight, with the help, yes, so, but anyway, so we are. I believe what we're going to do tonight, with the help of the Lord, we're going to be able to conclude this series on second Peter, chapter one how to keep from falling. We've been talking a lot about the different virtues. There's actually seven of them that have been listed there in second Peter, and I think it's add to your faith virtue and knowledge and temperance and patience and godliness, brotherly kindness and love. There we go look at me thinking that I know it. Uh, verse five, second peter one five.
Phillip Rich:For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue and to virtue. Knowledge to knowledge, selfcontrol and to self-control. Perseverance and to perseverance. Godliness and to godliness. Brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness, love. So it's seven total qualities, and he said this in verse eight. For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them I think that's the big key there they will keep you from being ineffective, they will keep you from being unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But so Peter gives you the flip side in verse 9, but whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness. Now, he's obviously not talking about physically nearsighted, because Peter wasn't an eye doctor. I think we can safely assume he was talking about physically nearsighted, because Peter wasn't an eye doctor. I think we can safely assume he was talking about being spiritually nearsighted. He said, having forgotten that he's been cleansed from his past sin. So that is, I guess, in a nutshell, what being nearsighted spiritually is. It's this.
David McIntyre:Nearsighted and blind.
Phillip Rich:And blind Absolutely this, and blind and blind, absolutely it's this, this kind of a short memory, like a hard heart, where you don't even remember that you've been cleansed of your past sins. So you end up defaulting back to those old ways. Uh, and that's not what God wants. God wants transformation. He wants fruit bearing. That's part of the reason why he saved us and called us is so that we could bear fruit and do good works. But in verse 10, this is the one we're finally going to focus on here, verse 10, it says therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these things, you will never stumble. That's in the King James, where it says you'll never fall, and you will receive verse 11, a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ.
Phillip Rich:Now, if there's one thing I could recommend, it would be for anyone watching or listening to this podcast. Please take time to read through this passage. 2 Peter, 1, verses, I believe, 3 through 11. Really, just read it over and over again, get you some other translations, just really sow it like a seed into your spirit, because this, to me, is such a powerful passage. But on the subject of making the colony election. Sure, david? What are your thoughts about what that scripture means?
David McIntyre:Yeah, you know, we jumped a little bit ahead of that last week because we went to stumble.
David McIntyre:And just as a reminder, we discussed the concept that stumble didn't mean fall, like just fall down or something like that, but stumble means it's the difference between falling into sin but getting back up versus falling away from God. And so the stumble here, the falling here, refers to falling away from God. You know the? I think Philip bought the scripture up in Proverbs where it talks about how a righteous man falls seven times and he gets back up every time.
David McIntyre:Righteous man falls seven times and he gets back up every time. And so we know that, and I almost hate to say this because some people will, you know they go too wild, but you know it's similar to that song we fall down, but we get up.
Phillip Rich:Oh, yeah, Donnie McLorgan right.
David McIntyre:Right, yeah, and that's true. We, as Christians, if there should be a characteristic about us, it's our resilience, it's our ability to. Even though we may make a mistake, even though we may spiritually or physically fall down, we continue to get back up and drive towards the things of God. But in some cases people apostatize or they fall away from God, and then they begin to make all of these excuses. And you know, philip was talking about in the beginning this concept of how you have all of these believers, or these so-called pastors and leaders who are deconstructing, who are involved in this kind of sin and that kind of sin. And to me, so many of those are people who have fallen away, who have apostatized, but I think for so many of them them, they don't know anything but the gospel you know about they don't know anything but church so that's where they stay and pray, p-r-e-y pray not
David McIntyre:p-r-a-y and um. And so, rather than stepping away, you know, like some of these pastors, you know they don't believe in trust, in follow God anymore, or have bought into some shtick of another religion or some Gnosticism, some modern day Gnosticism or some other antics like that, which is what Peter is dealing with. Peter's dealing with teachers who really are false teachers in 2 Peter and a bit in 1 Peter too as well. So rather than just say I don't believe in God anymore, I'm walking away from all this, they say, well, but this is the source of my money.
David McIntyre:So, I'm going to stick with it to have an income, but I'm not going to do anything that allows me to walk with God and stay connected with him. And so in the beginning of this verse in chapter 10. It says it starts off with this concept of therefore, brothers, strive, drive, work, make effort to make your calling and election sure. Now, this word calling and election, they're two very similar words and they almost mean the same thing, with some slight differences. Ryan, if we could go to the Strong's version of the Berean Study Bible and then let's click on this word, this first word here, calling and as we look at this word calling, if we look down at the helps word, studies, it says calling used of god inviting all people to receive his gift of salvation with all his blessings that go with it.
David McIntyre:so when we see that word calling in this particular. What it is implying is that all of us are called. We are called and we receive the salvation of the Lord and are beneficiaries of all God's promises. So the first word we have there is calling, which speaks to our salvation.
Phillip Rich:Yeah.
David McIntyre:But now, when we look at this second word in that mix and let's just go back for a second and let's click on and look at this word election. Okay, when we look at the Helps word studies, it almost gives this indication of sanctification Because it says I can't pronounce it correctly, but I think it's eclogue From ek means out from and to In Lego, meaning speaking to a conclusion, properly, selection out of and to a given outcome Election. So you have been selected out from situation A and have been called into situation B. You've been given this as an outcome. And when we look at this, it's like I'd explain it to Philip.
David McIntyre:It's like a double-sided coin that leads to the same place. On one side of the coin, the head side, you have your calling of the coin. The head side, you have your calling, which is your salvation, which is firm and sure, and on the other side, the tail side of the coin, you have your election, and in your election you have a responsibility to make your election sure. That's why this scripture, and really it's not just your election, it's both your calling and your election. You make both sure by striving to bring these virtues into your life.
David McIntyre:And so I wanted to point that out, because it's almost like a beautiful summary of everything that we've read, because everything that we've read from verse 3, where it talks about how His divine gift power has given unto us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence His own glory and excellence. Through these, he has given us His precious and magnificent promises so that through them, you may become partakers of the divine nature now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. That's part of your salvation.
Phillip Rich:Yeah.
David McIntyre:You have that. God has given that to you freely, all because you accepted Him as Lord and Savior of your life, you confessed your sins and you invited him to indwell you, and with that comes this all things that pertain unto life and godliness. You have everything you need through the knowledge of him. But just like we started out talking about with this, we finish up again in 10 saying the same thing strive to make your calling and election sure. What does that mean? It goes back to verse 5, for this very reason.
David McIntyre:Just like it said, strive, make every effort yeah to add to your faith virtue and knowledge and self-control and perseverance, godliness and kindness and brotherly kindness and love.
David McIntyre:Make every effort, strive, work hard to make these all a part of your life, and you make your calling and election sure, and so you need yes, you are called. There's no unless you commit the ultimate sin. There's no revocation per se of the calling of god that calls you into the, into salvation. Now, this isn't a message, though, of works, but it is right Because we're not judged by our works. We received everything through salvation. Now what we're working towards is to live and look like God, and that doesn't happen just sitting. Still, it happens because we make every effort. It happens through the knowledge of him. Yeah, have to dig in and know him, know his word, know what he's looking for, and then we begin to work and live this stuff out so that we make our calling and election sure. In other words, we guarantee that our walk doesn't just end with salvation, but it ends with us looking as much like Jesus as we possibly can, because that's what the Father wants from us.
Phillip Rich:That's good, david, that's good. You made me think of something when you said that he does not judge us according to our works, but it does say he rewards us according to our works. There is a difference, because and I think the parable of the talents gives a good kind of a foreshadowing or parallel of what that's all about.
Phillip Rich:Of what that's all about, you know, depending on how the servants um, handled the things that the master gave them, the resources he gave them, uh, that was what determined their reward. You know, the guy who went out with the five talents and he immediately started trading and, uh, doubling his money, you know he came back and the master was like all right, man, you did a great job. There it is, yeah, Uh, let's see which. I love this in verse 16. This is Matthew 25, by the way, Matthew 25, verse 16. It said the servant who had received the five talents which talents? There is actually a unit of currency. It's not talking about like tap dancing, and basketball.
Phillip Rich:It's talking about. It's a unit of currency called a talent. You know, just like we have the dollar, they had the talent, you know. But it said the servant who received the five talents went at once. That when I, when that little phrase first jumped out at me, I was like, oh man, one of the qualities that really set him up for success was the fact that he didn't hesitate. You know, he went at once. He had a sense of urgency about what he was doing, and it's that he put them to work. The King James says he traded with those talents. So he could have been a currency trader of some kind, but he went at once, put them to work and gained five more. So we're talking about 100% return on the investment. And it says likewise, the one with two talents gained two more. So he also had 100%, just in a different proportion. But the servant who had received the one talent went off. Oh boy, dug a hole in the ground.
David McIntyre:Yeah.
Phillip Rich:Hid his master's money, dug a hole in the ground, hid his master's money. Now this here is someone who's not making their calling and election sure. Now, the thing that got me too, david I meant to mention this earlier the word calling there, the fact that it said invitation, you know it was an invitation from.
Phillip Rich:God. So we've been invited. He's like I've got a gift of salvation. I've got, you know, righteousness available for you. Anything you know, I mean we're talking about you know the keys to the kingdom, if you will, god's giving it to us. But we have to step up and receive it. We have to use the power of our own choice, the power of our will, and say yes, I want that. And then, all of a sudden, god grants it to us because he said that as many as come to him, he will in no wise cast out.
David McIntyre:Right, you know, philip. Along that same line. It makes me think of what James talks about. James says you know, you can't go to somebody and you know, see that they're in need of clothing and blankets and say, ah, brother, be filled and be worn. You know, you, if you have the ability, what you should be doing is handing over blanket and clothes.
Ryan Holdeman:Come on man.
David McIntyre:I guess we get so caught up and confused about this message of works because the reality is that in order to I think it's Mark 5 or 6 where Jesus talks about working the works of God. There's just no way around it. While Christianity is not works-based, it doesn't mean there's no work to be done.
Phillip Rich:That's a good statement, david man. See well, if you want to have a cool thing to study, look up the phrase good work or good works good work or good works.
Phillip Rich:Just go through the New Testament and find out how many times that phrase, good work or good works is mentioned. You will be shocked, because you'll find out as you keep studying. That's what we're called to do, you know, in Ephesians 2, I think it's verse 10, it says we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Ah, yeah, look at Ryan man, that's what I'm talking about. So many different places here. Yeah, we're God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance. And then in Titus 2.7, the very next one down, it says in your teaching, show integrity, seriousness, and you must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. And then in Titus 3.14, he says let our people learn to devote themselves to good works.
Phillip Rich:So, over and over again, and it's all over the New Testament, that this is something that is and I think, david, what you're getting to. We're not working for our salvation, we're actually doing things that should be the fruit of salvation. Right, it's like the works I'm doing, the good works that I do to bless other people, that's a fruit of the thing that God's already did in me. You know, he's recreated me in Christ, he's given me his spirit. I'm supposed to show evidence of that by being a blessing to people, but it's not me trying to go out and do a bunch of good stuff. So God will love me and accept me. That's not what it's about.
Phillip Rich:It's about showing the fruit of what he's done and I believe, dude, that it's showing gratefulness for what he's done to me like in light of everything he's done for me. This is the least I can do is be a blessing to other people.
David McIntyre:Right, you know, in the commentary one of the commentaries I've been reading through his name was Thomas Schreiner and he said something interesting. He said those who treasure being forgiven live in a way that pleases God.
Ryan Holdeman:Ooh, ooh, ooh.
David McIntyre:Just think about that. Those who treasure being forgiven live in a way that pleases God.
Phillip Rich:You just gave me something, dude. Take it that story when the lady came and poured the oil out on Jesus' feet and was wiping with her hair. The Pharisees got mad. They were like do you know what kind of woman this is? You know, maybe Mary was an Instagram thought. We don't know, Sorry, they obviously knew that she was some kind of a promiscuous.
David McIntyre:Yeah, they knew about her past.
Phillip Rich:They knew about her past. So Jesus said okay, I forgot the exact parable. Where is that thing at, ron? I hope you got it pulled up, dude. It's the one where she poured out the oil. Yeah, there you go. Oh gosh, no, I'm mixing the two up. It's the one where he asked the Pharisees which one do you think will love more, the one who was forgiven for very little or the one who was forgiven for a lot? I forgot where that's at, but basically he was saying to whom much has been forgiven, they will love me even more. Much has been forgiven, they will love me even more. Right, and I think that's to me. That's what came to my mind when you said that thing from that, the quote from that guy, the Shriner guy.
David McIntyre:Yeah, but you can see that being forgiven and being aware of your forgiveness it makes you want to take action.
Phillip Rich:Yeah, and maybe that's the way.
David McIntyre:It's less about works and it's about taking action as believers, and when we take action, we do things like make every effort, we strive, we push, we drive for, and we're always striving for the things of God, because that's what matters, and we recognize that's what's matter, that's why we put the effort into it, and so I just don't want us to get caught up in this concept of works versus action. We should definitely take action.
Phillip Rich:You know what? I just found this in Luke 7. Ryan, I had you going all over the New Testament man, but it's in Luke 7. It's that story where let's see yeah, here we go. 36, luke 7, 36. 36, luke 7, 36.
Phillip Rich:It says one of the Pharisees desired Jesus, or asked him that he would eat with him. So he went to the Pharisee's house and sat down to meet. Verse 37, behold a woman in that city. Okay, here we go. A sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there. She brought an alabaster jar full of perfume and as she stood behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. She kissed his feet and anointed them with perfume. Of course, verse 39,.
Phillip Rich:When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself if this man were a prophet, he would know who this is. I think that's funny man it's like. Okay, and what kind of woman is touching him? For she's a sinner. But Jesus answered him.
Phillip Rich:Simon, I have something to tell you. Tell me, teacher. He said two men were debtors to a certain money lender. One owed him 500 denarii, the other 50. When they were unable to repay him. He forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more? And Simon said I suppose the one who was forgiven more you have judged correctly. Jesus said, and turning to the woman, he said to Simon do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not greet me with a kiss, but she, dude, that's heavy, that's heavy and I I feel like too david. You know, for those of us who've been saved for a while, we can forget man, and we can forget just how bad off we were before god showed up and and forgave us.
David McIntyre:Yeah. You know, and what a bad thing to forget.
Phillip Rich:Exactly.
David McIntyre:But let's go. But now, if we jump back in this scripture, though, to forget is just like this scripture says it means that you've gone nearsighted and blind to the point of blindness.
Phillip Rich:Yeah, having forgotten that, you've been cleansed from your past sins come on, man come on we can't forget that no we need to hold it out daily yeah, it's interesting too, dude, that when jesus was rebuking the pharisees because they definitely had, you know, religious high-mindedness, you know they thought they had arrived, the one thing he called one of the things, many things he called them, but one of the things he called them was blind. He said you blind guides, yep, you blind guides.
David McIntyre:And. I was like they yep Yep.
Phillip Rich:Basically, he was echoing what Peter said. Well, I guess Peter echoed what Jesus said. But you know they lacked, they had forgotten. You know how bad off they were without the law, without God's law. You know they had it all figured out. This thing, it's a pride thing, honestly, man. Law, you know they had it all figured out. Um, this thing, it's a pride thing, honestly, man. You know where you get to this place, where you think I've arrived, I'm good, nah, man don't ever get there.
Phillip Rich:There's always something to learn always yeah, and I think you should definitely stay in touch with that, that part of you that knows where you came from. You know not stay in touch with it to the point where you slip back into it, but but definitely don't forget man. Don't forget the things God's done for you, you know and Philip.
David McIntyre:That leads us into the last part of this, and it's the blessing in it all yeah having striven for your calling and election, having maintained this action in your life, where you're consistently trying to appropriate the virtues and the fruit of the spirit and you're growing in the things of God. Um, we see, the scripture says if you practice these things, the promise is you will never apostatize, you'll never fall away from God.
David McIntyre:Thank you, lord, but the other plus is in verse 11, and you will receive a lavish reception, a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Amazing Christ.
David McIntyre:And there's another piece of motivation for you to walk in a way, to walk worthy of the calling to which you've been called to walk worthy of the things of the Lord, because when you do these things, even though you may and here's the thing God's not calling you to be perfect. He's calling you to consistently keep going, even when you fall down, even when things don't go exactly the way that you wanted them to. You know all of that. Just continue pursuing. Continue pursuing these things, continue in your knowledge of him. Continue in all of that. And he says what you're going to find is that, either when you pass or when you get called up to meet him in the air, that there's going to be reception and you're going to be an honored guest at that reception, and it's going to really be a reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ.
Phillip Rich:Come on.
David McIntyre:What a beautiful, beautiful promise is that you know you'll have benefits of these things paying off in your life in this world. But the great reward is in the world to come. That's right when you meet Jesus and you, just like you, were invited, you were called and elected. You will also, having already been chosen, your name already be written down. It'll be like you're an honored guest, ready to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Phillip Rich:Praise God, praise God, man Dude. I'll tell you, and I was thinking about, like, what would be a practical example of something like this how does that work just in daily life? I thought about just something very simple, like when Peter said add to your faith. One of the virtues that you said to add was patience. So let's say that you're a dude going about your day, and maybe on a regular basis, or just what you tend to do.
Phillip Rich:You might tend to get a little impatient with your kids, might yell at them when you shouldn't. You might get a little short with your wife. Uh, be a little smart mouth to whatever, whatever, when you know you probably shouldn't Things like that. But then that one time or that, maybe those few times, when you start making a decision to practice more patience and instead of having some snappy, snarky comeback on your wife, you respond to her in patience and love instead. You respond to her in patience and love instead what you've done. In that moment, you've started to change the trajectory and now you're beginning to add patience to your faith. You know as a character quality that you're working on, and the other ones too.
Phillip Rich:When it talked about adding knowledge to your faith, that means, you know, instead of just kind of hanging out in life with what you already know, maybe you start pursuing more knowledge, maybe in the field that you have a career in, maybe knowledge regarding relationships you can have a better relationship with your wife or with your co-workers or friends or whatever. Something that simple can be evidence of a pursuit of those things that you're trying to add to your faith. That's what we're talking about, just the practical examples of trying to make those incremental improvements over time and that will, as long as you stay in that realm of taking the initiative and moving forward proactively, that's going to keep you in that place of building spiritual momentum, if you will. And from that you know Peter said, if you just continue to add those things and they start becoming in abundance in you, next thing you know, you'll get to a place where you shall never fall because you're in pursuit of him and in pursuit of the goals that he has laid out for us.
David McIntyre:I love that word pursuit and just think of this. Like Philip, you just gave a good example, but stop looking at this so ethereally. I've got to work to treat my fellow man, you know, in such a way and it's like it's not your fellow man that you have a problem with, it's your kids, it's your sibling, you know, it's that person at work that keeps getting on your nerve that you show absolutely no tolerance for.
David McIntyre:You can tolerate everybody else, but this one person. It's the patient that you're the nurse for. That just gets on your nerves and you can't take them anymore.
Ryan Holdeman:You know, it's.
David McIntyre:All of these are opportunities for us to exercise, to exercise these things and to acquire them as skill sets. You know, when we're on the other side of our world, you know we do a lot of training and teaching around what we call pro skills, which are really the soft skills, transformational leadership and that kind of thing and we work with a lot of young professionals to help to get into the right starting place for them to have career success. But what we're teaching them are skill sets to acquire and add to their, their knowledge base and ultimately even to their resumes. But do you know that the skill of communication, the skill of empathy and all of those things are not added in one event?
David McIntyre:They're added over a series of events where you're practicing it, you're learning it, it makes sense to you and then, before you know it, you've applied empathy just out of a second hand thought process, rather than get mad or rather than treat the situation poorly. Of those skills is something that is a process that happens over time. The same thing is true of these biblical skills. There's something that you practice, you learn. You begin to realize oh, that was not love, right there. That did not feel like brotherly love at all.
David McIntyre:Let me try again. And you go back and you try again, you go back and you repent and you apologize, and you try again and you start seeing it bearing fruit and you go back and you try again, you go back and you repent and you apologize, and you try again and you start seeing it bearing fruit and you're acquiring these skills and then you make them a part of your garden. And it's the same principle, it's the same concept as any skill you learn out in the world for your job or whatever it is that you're doing. So I think we throw the bookmark right there.
Phillip Rich:Yes, I think we can say we've. Can we say we put a bow on this and tie it up and bloop?
David McIntyre:And the gift is available for all who will hear.

Phillip Rich:Absolutely.
David McIntyre:Father, god, in the name of Jesus, we just thank you and give you praise for everybody who's watching and listening, be it now or later. Lord, you know what's going on in every person's life, but you've prescribed a way to keep us from falling. Help us to be wise and to use good decision-making to follow through with your prescription for not falling. Help us, lord God, to grow in our knowledge of you.
David McIntyre:And then, lord, help us to pursue these virtues, lord God, like little skill sets, and add them to our library and grow in them day by day, by day by day, so that we can be as those who don't fall away from you and fall away from your church, lord God, but we stick to you. Even when we may fall individually, we get back up and we keep walking with you. Lord God, you have the words of life, you have everything that we need. So we put our trust and our faith in you, lord, and your word promises that, if we trust in you with all of our hearts and lean not to our own understanding and all of our ways to acknowledge you, you will direct our path. So thank you for directing our paths, for ordering our steps, lord God, and for leading us into the path of righteousness.
David McIntyre:We love you, Father. We give you praise and glory, and we believe that we receive it now in Jesus' name.
