Hello, welcome to this episode of Bible Bros and Brew. Glad you could join us. Hope you got your coffee ready. In this episode we're going to continue with what we started from, probably two or three episodes ago, regarding breaking the cycle of sin, and I promise I'll be able to get through one of these intros where I'm drinking my coffee sometime soon, but in the meantime, stay tuned, it's going to be a good one, welcome, welcome, everyone, to another episode of Bible Bros and Brew.
Speaker 1:My name is Philip and of course, with me is the crew of all crews. I've got Ryan here up above. I've got John here to the oh man, my pointing is off. Yep, that way, david, in the end of diagonal. And we are here tonight to just share some more insights, some more things from the word. That's what we love to do on these episodes. It's just take time to get into the scriptures, break them, see how we can apply them to our everyday life. We try to avoid being deep and super spooky and overly pious. We try to keep things on a very practical level, because we believe that that's exactly how God wants us to be Authentic, genuine and not trying to be anything other than what we try to be lately. How about that?
Speaker 2:I got the reference on that one, oh man.
Speaker 1:It was in the 90s or something like that. Yeah.
Speaker 2:It's all like yeah, yeah, I'm close to early 2000s.
Speaker 1:It's all good, man. I have to pull that up sometime and look at it. We'll have a whole little conference about that situation, man, but anyway. So we've been talking about this topic of breaking the cycle of sin. So we've been talking about this topic of breaking the cycle of sin. We've tied it into our identity in Christ and what that means in terms of what the Scripture says about who we are now.
Speaker 1:Because once you get born again, as 2 Corinthians 5.17 says, if any man is in Christ he is a new creation. So there's some wild things, or good things not just wild things, but good things that happen spiritually. When you get born again, god literally recreates you from the inside out. You get a brand new spirit. But the issue is, you're a three part being. So you're a spiritual, you're a spirit at your core, but you have a soul, which is your mind, your will and your emotions, and you live in a physical body. That's the three parts of man. Just as God is triune, he also made man triune. And so we have this brand new, completely recreated spirit. But yet our mind stays the same. Our body obviously stays the same. I know there's an old song that says I looked at my hands, and my hands looked new. I looked at my feet, and my feet did too. It was talking about being born again, but that's not how it works. You have the same body you had before you got saved, as you do now.
Speaker 2:There you go stealing somebody's shimmy from them. Right now You're already in the spirit when you started talking.
Speaker 1:So the issue now becomes you've got this brand new spirit that's desiring God, desiring the things of God. You know that you're different from your core, but at the same time you've got these things that have kind of hung over from the past, these old thought patterns, old thought habits, old things that you may have used to fall into back when you weren't saved, that you know aren't right for you to be doing now. All of that stuff creates this conflict, conflict and this is what we call the struggle against sin, the struggle against especially habitual sin or sin that you commit on an ongoing basis. Those are the kind of things that God is looking to help you get rid of out of your life. Because let's face it, man, it's hard to live a life of full faith, full confidence, full freedom and peace if you're still in bondage to some sin from your past or whatever the case is. It's difficult to do, and plus, not only that, but the wages of sin is death. Eventually those things catch up with you in one way or the other, and it's one of those things where, if you want to live a strong life as a Christian, it's hard to do so if you haven't shed some of those old sin patterns or old sin habits.
Speaker 1:And so that's what this is all about is learning how to step into, or really what Paul said all through Ephesians and Colossians. He says to put on the new man. It's almost like the metaphor of putting on a new outfit. He said take off the old man, put off that old outfit that used to be subject to sin, subject to every little whim and lust that you had, and instead put on the new man that has been according to Ephesians 4, created in righteousness and true holiness. So that's what we're going to be talking about, and picking up with Romans 8. We've been in Romans 8 for a good minute now, so we're going to see if we can try to get as far as we can go in Romans 8. So, with that in mind, let's go ahead and check out what the Scripture says. But actually, before we go there I almost forgot we have to do what's in the cup first. So, david, yes, man, this is like the highlight of the whole situation, just kidding.
Speaker 2:You were rolling. I was just going to roll with you, you'd be like who gives a dang about the cup?
Speaker 1:Dude man, I got to be careful dude, but yeah. So, david, go ahead and tell us what is in your cup this evening, sir.
Speaker 2:Tonight I am bringing a little bit of a different punch of Christmas to you. We're still in the holiday season, so tonight I'm drinking from Red Barn a little bit of spiced buttered rum. Ooh, this is a lot of. This is a good. You know, it's not now for those of you who might get upset. It's not real rum, but it tastes of rum and that spiced butter it's a little bit of brown sugar maybe in there. It's really quite nice. And then, of course, I've had to top it off with a lovely mug. Let me turn it this way Nice little gingerbread house Christmas mug.
Speaker 2:That's dope dude Now my conversation is going to be, as Phillip once said, on fleek yes, let's not forget the on fleek era by any means.
Speaker 1:All right, Ryan, how about you what you got in the cup there, sir?
Speaker 4:I've got the Pete's Holiday Blend. Oh, I feel like I'm starting to turn into Phil with Peregrine, like I just eat every week.
Speaker 2:You guys are, we'll talk about it later. Yeah, you guys are, we'll talk about it later.
Speaker 4:Yeah, if Pete wants to send me some coffee, I will totally allow it. I've got just the typical travel mug that I've been sporting here and I like it because it keeps the coffee really hot and it stays hot and it's really good he's coming out.
Speaker 1:He's coming out. Shout out to Bucky's too, man. Shout out to Bucky.
Speaker 2:We're friends with Pete's on Instagram.
Speaker 3:Yes, excellent.
Speaker 2:We might have to do Pete's Holiday Blend this week. Maybe we'll do that over the spot, ryan, you just inspired.
Speaker 1:Yes, what I'm talking about, son. You know what I'm saying, all right.
Speaker 3:John, how about you, sir? Listen two things. What does holiday blend consist of? Because I keep seeing that and I have no idea. We can come back to that Second. Thing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's a wide and varied question, because Starbucks has a holiday.
Speaker 3:Yeah, okay, number two. Number two I'm drinking Donut Shop. I was going to look in the cup, like it's going to tell me what's in there, but I went to the.
Speaker 3:Donut Shop and there is a Snickers flavored coffee and typically I don't care for Snickers-flavored coffee and typically I don't care for Snickers, but I am impressed by how accurate. It tastes like a Snickers bar. I don't know if any of y'all actually like that candy bar, but it is impressive and it's the donut shop, so you can't go wrong with that. And of course, I don't know if y'all saw it In lieu of the Christmas holiday, the Christmas spirit, it just feels right, it feels like home.
Speaker 1:Could you display that mug for us again, John? I want to see the details.
Speaker 3:I'm going to take some B-roll shots for you after this. I got you that is dope dude.
Speaker 1:I got to say it's got the Norman Rockwell vibe and I'm digging that.
Speaker 3:I also wish it was just five cents too.
Speaker 2:That I can guarantee you. It was not your question on Holiday Blend. It's funny In the coffee world Holiday Blend can literally be whatever that coffee company decides that it is for them. Yes A lot of them have, like some of your coffee, your holiday flavors of like oranges, cranberry. You can get different spices that are usually included in those as well. What's yours got, ryan?
Speaker 3:Oh Nice, but could you ask? For anything else, come on now.
Speaker 1:That's all you need Christmas magic in a Bucky's mug?
Speaker 2:Yes, that means that you could literally be on a rooftop with eight little squirrel deer going from house to house doing Bucky's thing, popping Bucky's nuts off at everybody's house.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I don't think Ryan found that funny sorry, okay, alright.
Speaker 1:I will have to say dude, those Bucky's roasted nuts are like awesome roasted nuts are like awesome dude. What are they like honey glazed or maple glazed or something like that? They're so good, dude, but anyway.
Speaker 2:Everything in Buc-ee's is great. That's why we need them.
Speaker 3:It's insane. It's insane.
Speaker 2:Phillip, you better take us into this word before somebody gets hurt.
Speaker 1:Philip, you better take us into this word before somebody gets married. Well before I do that I do want to go ahead and highlight my peregrine here. I've got a new one from Peru Finca Guayaquil.
Speaker 2:Never mind. Okay, you're making stuff up now.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it has notes of fudge, cherry and clover honey. You better believe that, bro. So, um, and I figured to stay in a festive mood, I wanted to highlight my defective Peregrine Christmas mug. Uh, it's not supposed to cut off right here. It's supposed to. This is supposed to go all the way to the bottom, but uh, had a little bit of a defect with the graphics there. That's funny, it's all good man.
Speaker 2:Hey, we also want to hear what you guys are drinking out there. So if we're drinking something while you're watching us live, drop us a note in the comments. Let us know what you're sipping on tonight.
Speaker 1:That's right, man, and we encourage you to do that. Brew up some coffee. If you know you're about to hit the live stream on Bible Bros. And Brew, go ahead and get yourself some hot chocolate, some coffee, some tea and anything that'll make you as hype as we are. That'll be awesome. So, anyway, all right. So let's go ahead and get to the scripture before we get into trouble. We're going to continue in the vein of Romans 8. We were talking about last week about the sonship that we have because of being in Christ. We talked about how the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we're children of God, and I think we went on into the joint heirs with Christ thing and so forth. I know I'm doing a horrible summary at this point, but I think we left off in, or we were getting into, verse 18 of Romans 8.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Okay, good, good, good. And we okay, good, good, good. And we were saying based on verse 17, if you don't mind scrolling down a tad bit, ryan when it says since we are verse 17, since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ, we are heirs of God's glory, which is an insanely awesome concept. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. And we talked a little bit about what that means.
Speaker 1:But then I think in this episode we're going to dig into a little further, because the next verse really kind of continues in that theme. In verse 18, it says Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. And this is an interesting thing, because when you really start looking at the concept of suffering, especially in the New Testament, what you'll find, or what you'll discover, is that in a lot of verses it's referring to the suffering that comes by way of resisting worldly temptations, resisting those three things that we all have to deal with in this world, which is the world, the flesh and the very fact that you're a believer living in this world that, if we want to be honest about it, is just hostile to the things of God pretty much all the way around. If you are a believer in Jesus, if you plan on being a person who follows Christ, I can go ahead and tell you right now you're living in an environment that does not support the type of life you want to live.
Speaker 2:Not anymore.
Speaker 1:Not anymore. Everywhere you look, whether it's in media, tv, movies, music, entertainment everything out there promotes the things that nine times out of ten don't line up with what God's idea for humanity is, don't line up with what God's idea for humanity is, and that becomes a problem for the believer, because if you desire to live a life that's, let's say, holy, or you use the words like holy or purity and things like that, you're automatically going to be looked at as an oddball, you're going to be looked at as a square. You're lame, you don't want to have any fun, you're a stick in the mud and it's kind of this thing of you know, many times people view the Christian life as something boring, which, if you really understand what it means to follow Christ, the last thing you'll be is bored. I can guarantee you that Fellow fit with God is an awesome thing and learning about him is awesome because it's an eternal pursuit. Number one, but then number two, the things that God actually does promote, the things that he does want you to move towards now that you're a believer in Christ, those things actually bring the most peace you'll ever experience. They'll bring the most joy you'll ever experience and you'll start to understand that all this stuff that we claim is designed to make us happy. A lot of times it doesn't. You know, if all you pursue is your own selfish desires, I promise you you're going to live a miserable life.
Speaker 1:And in John 13, and I totally didn't mean to go here, but, brian, if you don't mind pulling that up, john 13, jesus gave us the key of all keys, because in that chapter he was talking about, or it kind of describes, what happened when Jesus was about to him and the disciples were about to do their Passover dinner. And in verse one it says oh gosh, where is it? It was now just before the Passover feast and Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the father. Having loved his own, who were in the world, he loved them to the very end. And then let me just skip down here to verse. There we go, verse four. So he got up from the supper, laid aside his outer garments and wrapped a towel around his waist, and after that he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel that was around them.
Speaker 1:Now, back in these times and in this culture, that was the act of the most lowly, the most least esteemed servant was the one who had this task and this responsibility to actually wash people's feet, like when they came in from a long journey. Imagine that, dude, these people are wearing sandals, their feet are nasty, sweaty, you know all that stuff. It was the job of the servant to wash a person's feet. And it's interesting because Peter said in verse six he came to Simon Peter who asked him Lord, you're going to wash my feet? And Jesus replied you don't realize now what I'm doing, but later you'll understand. And of course, peter's like never shall you wash my feet. Jesus answered unless I wash you, you have no part with me. All of a sudden, peter changed his tune. Then, lord Peter replied not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well. He was all in at that point.
Speaker 1:Now, down here, we'll go skip a little further down for the sake of time. He says in verse 13, you call me teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am. And if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you should also wash one another's feet. I've set you an example so that you should do as I've done for you. Truly, I tell you, no servant's greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Speaker 1:And verse 17 was what I wanted to get to If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. Now in the King James it says if you know these things, happy are you if you do them. And I thought about that one day and it's sitting here in plain black and white, that that is the key to happiness is living the life of serving other people, is living the life of serving other people, living the life of that, that that's pointed away from yourself, if that makes sense. Always just serving self never leads to a happy life. And um, I, I, david I don't know if you have any thoughts on that, I just wanted to throw that out there. It's kind of in the theme of what we're about to talk about.
Speaker 2:No, you're on a roll, keep going.
Speaker 1:Oh, good deal. So we get to this whole passage here. It's describing the life of someone that's trying to follow Jesus or imitate him, because in Ephesians 5, it says be imitators of God as dear children, and so this is one of the things he told us to do. He said just like I loved you, you should love one another. And that's basically what it says later on in John 13.
Speaker 1:I'll have to go to it, but, point being, that type of life is the type of life that Jesus desires us to live now, and so that life automatically will put you at odds with the ways of this world and the culture of this world, because the idea that the world has for your life is for you to pursue your own pleasure. Pursue whatever these things the trappings of the world money, success, fame, fortune, all that stuff like that. Go out there and have sex with as many people as you can, get as much money as you can. Whatever the case is, the things that we think are going to make us happy. That will automatically put you at odds with what God's way has been designed for us, and so you know, Phil, I will say this.
Speaker 2:I don't quite remember where it is. It's one of the New Testament letters. I'm wanting to say that it's either Colossians or could be Thessalonians one of the Thessalonians. He's talking about a situation where there was there were some people who were living these, this lifestyle where they didn't feel obligated to do anything for to help the religious community, community around them. Yeah, but what they were doing was they were serving the rich people. They were going and feeding them grapes and then doing their bidding, running around for them, and that kind of thing, and they felt like they were kind of better than everybody else.
Speaker 2:Wow and that they didn't have any obligation, and one of the things that Paul talks about is our responsibility to live a counterculture lifestyle and to live a lifestyle that is not like the world. There's no way that you can read the word and partake of it and think that you're supposed to be like the rest of the world.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:Absolutely counter to what Christ has called us to, and one of the primary reasons why is because when people see us, they should see something different than what they see in the world there should be some distinctive contrast between Christians and the world? And if there's not, then what do we have?
Speaker 1:That's good, man, that's good. That's good. That's the basic core of the type of life we've been called to live, now that we're born again. It is like you said go up the the, the river, um, because we're swimming against the current. That is a you're constantly meeting a type of resistance, and that resistance that you're meeting up against is the temptations of the world, the pull uh towards those things that you know are not, not from God and not of God, uh, the things you have to fight against in order to maintain what Jesus said about. You know, stay on the straight and narrow path. You know wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction. He said but your job is to stay on the straight and narrow path, and that's not easy. And because it's not easy, because it does require that you to work out your own salvation.
Speaker 1:Like Philippians 2 says, that creates a form of suffering that you have to deal with every single day, because you're trying to live in a way that you know will please God. And don't get me wrong, we've already been made blameless, unreprovable in his sight. So it's not like it's a performance thing with God. But at the same time, we also know that if we're going to call ourselves believers, like Paul said in 2 Timothy. He said anyone who names the name of Christ should be departing from iniquity. You shouldn't be out there yielding to it all the time and living a lifestyle that reflects iniquity or sin. That shouldn't be the way you live, and so that's the pushing against the current we're talking about and that's the suffering that we're dealing with, because there will be temptations, there will be persecutions, there will be things that come against you that will make you sometimes question is it even worth it for me to live as a believer? Because it just gets hard sometimes. Man.
Speaker 2:Just remember, though, that swimming upstream, against the current, is what helps the salmon grow stronger. Come on now, even though they might not make the first time. All the way up the stream as they continue to swim against it, they get stronger and stronger until they can make the leap from one pond to the next or this place to that place. So I think sometimes there's something unglamorous about this Christian life, and it is that as we resist sin, we are also growing stronger.
Speaker 2:Yes, yes and that's not always the path that we would like to take to strength. We'd like to just be made strong.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:And that's not typically the way that it happens. But you know, what's so fun about it is that when you go through stuff and you get on the other side and you find that you are stronger and you realize that you're mentally tougher, you find that you are physically tougher, you find that you're spiritually stronger, you're glad. You're glad and you look at those things that you went through in a different light than what you might have looked at them through as you started going through them.
Speaker 1:That's good, david, that's good. And Ryan, if you wouldn't mind going to 1 Timothy 4, there's something I wanted to point out in line with this. Any time that you're pushing against that opposition by way of temptation and all those things, any time you resist and are successful in resisting, it's almost like you've trained your spirit to respond properly and now you'll be stronger for the next time that happens. And so in verse 7, 1 Timothy 4, 7, it says but refuse profane and old wise fables and exercise yourself rather unto godliness, for bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. So he's saying as you exercise yourself to godliness, you exercise yourself in these ways that will produce the spiritual fruit that Galatians 5 talks about the love, joy, peace, long-suffering, all that and resisting temptation. That's making your spirit stronger. It's almost like you did a little curl, or you know, or a little you know, bench press or whatever, and you're building your muscle up, spiritually speaking, and exercising yourself to godliness. He said it not only has profit in this life, but also in the life that is to come. Because, think about it, dude, if we believe that we're going to spend eternity with the Lord one day.
Speaker 1:Why in the world would we not want to start practicing what it might be like to live in that environment now? We're citizens of heaven Once you become born again. Philippians, I think it's one or two. It says our citizenship is in heaven. King James says our conversation is in heaven, but it means our citizenship is in heaven. So why shouldn? Our conversation is in heaven, but it means our citizenship is in heaven. So why shouldn't we want to focus on or exercise that type of lifestyle now? Get ready for it right.
Speaker 3:That's good Phil, that's good man, I know.
Speaker 1:I've kind of went all over the place so far. But back to what we made so far. But back to what we made.
Speaker 2:That's where the gist of it. What started driving the conversation was the concept that suffering is real, and I love the concept in 7.
Speaker 1:It's that suffering and the glory are connected and you're going to have to go you're going to have to go.
Speaker 2:You're going to have to go through one uh to also benefit from the other, and that is, yes, there is glory. Jesus has given us glory. He's glorified himself in us. He's glorified himself in himself. Oh, the father has glorified him. You can go, you can go through all the paths of glory, but there's also, with that glory, going to be temptation and struggle that will come your way, that you're going to have to overcome and as you overcome, you know the scripture talks about how we move from glory to glory to glory.
Speaker 2:You kind of can see a little bit now with this verse how that happens. It's we overcome and we see more glory, we overcome, we see more glory, we overcome, we see more glory, and we just move from glory to glory to glory. So that's an important part of the puzzle. Glory, so that's an important part of the puzzle. So, ryan, if you pick back up with the verse here in Romans, chapter 8, verses 18, it says yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he revealed to us later. Phil, what are you thinking there when you hear that verse?
Speaker 1:Definitely how, especially in the context of what we're about to go into and we'll be touching on a little bit tonight. He's talking about the suffering that we're dealing with, living in this physical body that is numb to the things of the spirit world, numb to the things of God because it's not yet been physically redeemed Us understanding how to navigate this life with this physical body. It's nothing compared to the glory that's going to be revealed. And when we get into actually if you don't mind putting up the verse there again, ryan that glory that's going to be revealed, he starts talking about what that means. And when we get into actually if you don't mind putting up the verse there again, ryan that glory that's going to be revealed, he starts talking about what that means in verse 19.
Speaker 3:He said for all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are Ding ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding ding.
Speaker 2:Just a little note there. He told us just a little bit earlier in this chapter who his children are.
Speaker 1:Right as many as are led by the Spirit of God. We are his children. Come on now. In verse 20 says Against its will, all creation was subjected to God's curse. Now that happened when Adam sinned. When Adam sinned, not only did he and Eve fall under that dominion of sin, but all of creation fell under that same curse of sin as well.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's chapter three.
Speaker 1:That's right, absolutely, and that's why it said against its will. Now that shows you something of the type of authority that God gave man in the Garden of Eden. He said you're going to have dominion over everything I made.
Speaker 2:That didn't really change once Adam sinned, but now the very thing that Adam had dominion over also fell under that same curse, and so it created some drama there Not just to create drama, but remember what he said in 17 and 18, where he specifically said that this ground is going to be difficult work and that it is going to be. It's going to produce, I believe it says thorns, and this is yeah, yeah so it, just it. It just made the work that man See remember. The work that God gave man was easy.
Speaker 1:Come on now.
Speaker 2:He's going to say now, that which was easy for you is going to take the sweat of your brow in order to make happen. So, and here's creation, like what do we do? But God had a plan and he has a plan for creation, just like you hear in the King James. It'll say the creature and the creature is creation, what God has created, so there's a plan for all of it that's right, absolutely.
Speaker 1:Because, believe me, when I say as beautiful as this world is, as beautiful as this planet is, we're only seeing the fallen version of it.
Speaker 2:Correct.
Speaker 1:We haven't even seen how amazingly awesome this planet was before it got plagued with the curse of sin.
Speaker 2:And we've seen some beautiful things in the earth. There are jaw-droppingly beautiful things in the earth, and none of it is to be compared to the glory that will be revealed. Come on now, that's what that scripture is saying. You hadn't seen nothing yet, that's right.
Speaker 1:That's right. You hadn't seen nothing yet, that's right. That's right. I'll tell you what, though? Even in its current state, the beauty that's here on this earth, it reflects the nature of our creator, Right? You know? Just like an artist, a lot of times their art reflects something about the personality of the artist, and there's a famous quote that I love. It says nature is God's art. I love that. It's true. It's like you look at a sunset over the beach or you look at a mountain range, Like when I went out to actually go to Peregrine's coffee shop in Colorado about four years ago, I could not believe how amazing that the mountains were. It's like it's at this kind of at the foot of the Rocky mountains, and I was just blown away at the beauty of this out there.
Speaker 1:Man, so God's? Hey, look, if you didn't know anything else about God, if you had no clue who he was, he talked to Job the same thing he said look at creation. You can be able to tell something about me by the things I've created. And Romans 1 says the same thing. It's like the visible attributes of God can be discerned by the things that have been made. You can understand something about who he is by the things that he's made. And so this whole idea of creation being redeemed, or creation is going to have a time in the future where it gets completely renewed as well. That's one of the central themes that I don't think we think about a lot because it's just not something on our minds every day, but it is definitely in God's heart and in His mind. So the Romans 8 passage there kind of hits on that as well. The Romans 8 passage there kind of hits on that as well. Back to verse 21. It says the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay.
Speaker 2:That's a fascinating idea there. If I could just say real quick, Phil, one of the interesting things that means is that mankind, God's creation, us sons, and creation are partnered together. Yes, and we are both in hope, in earnest expectation of the good of redemption. We both are hoping for the same thing. The earth is saying Lord, recreate us, redeem us.
Speaker 2:And we as men are saying and it's a little bit there, it's in the scripture, but men are saying in our hearts we've had a taste of what's to come by way of the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:We want to be redeemed, we want to be with you, we want to see the end as it's intended to be, and it's a beautiful thing to hope for which you're about to see in the scripture.
Speaker 1:That's so good, good stuff, david. In verse 21, I'm sorry, 22, it says, for we know that all creation has been groaning, as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Now it's talking about this yearning that creation itself has to be redeemed, and it's something it gets pretty deep. And when you think about even when Jesus died on the cross, it said that there was darkness over the whole earth for like, I think, three hours or something like that.
Speaker 1:That was creation mourning the death of their creator, when you think about it that way. And there was an earthquake and it's like creation itself was revolting against the death of its creator. That's some powerful, powerful stuff, man. So I think we kind of discount that aspect of the thing that God has done. Everything that he created is alive and responds to him in one way or the other. You know how Jesus said if you didn't praise me, the rocks would cry out. There's a whole thing there, man. It gets pretty heavy.
Speaker 2:I don't even think, Philip, that's figurative.
Speaker 1:I don't either, man.
Speaker 2:I know that we look at the Bible and we recognize that some of it is poetry and some of it is prophecy and some of it is different types of things. I personally believe that when he says those rocks will cry out, they literally will. And when he says those rocks will cry out.
Speaker 2:They literally will, because, if you, there's evidence in the earth. I wish I had known we were going to go here because I've had Ryan, I would have looked it up for myself, but there's so much sound that's being given off in the universe.
Speaker 1:Oh my goodness, there is.
Speaker 2:And I'm not talking about the universe as in this creepy weird. We're not talking about that.
Speaker 3:You literally have things that are making sounds.
Speaker 2:I think that's those items, those creations, that creature giving worship to God in its own way, come on man giving worship to God in its own way. Come on, man. And so don't tell if. If a tree can raise its leaf or wave its limbs and praise to God, surely a rock can cry out.
Speaker 1:Come on, man Dude. I remember there was this, this wild thing. I think I saw it on YouTube or Twitter, one of the two, but some scientists recorded crickets doing their normal cricket thing the chirp I know exactly what you're talking about. They slowed it down, put it in super slow motion, I guess and the sound those crickets made sounded like an angelic chorus. It was the craziest thing I've ever heard, man.
Speaker 2:It's the same things with the stars in the heaven. Yes, yes, every, everything is singing to God. Everything that he created is praising him, and it makes sense because he's the creator. Yes, it's not all this foolishness that you know. Men like to believe that the big clap gave us all of this stuff. The big clap couldn't do it. No, no and so it's not the big clap that's getting the praise, it's God getting the praise through his creation.
Speaker 1:Come on now. Look at this. Brian's done pulled up some great references here. That was that verse in Luke. What was it? Luke 19, I think it was. Yeah, verse 40 it says he answered and said unto them I tell you that if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. And then those cross references are amazing. It says for the stones in habakkuk 2, 11, where the stones will cry out from the wall and the rafters will echo it from the woodwork. Then in psalm 96, 11, and it says let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice, let the sea resound and all that fills it, let the fields exalt and all that's in them, and all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.
Speaker 1:Dude, it's a proven fact that and I'm not a scientist, but matter gives off a resonance. Different materials vibrate at different frequencies. This stuff's been proven over and over again. And so God, he made everything living like that, everything living like that. I honestly believe that because of the curse of sin, because of the fall of man, some of that's been either hindered or dampened, or whatever you want to call it. Can you imagine how harmonious everything was before the fall of man? That would be unbelievable.
Speaker 1:There's a scripture I think it's in Job somewhere that talks about how the stars had some type of a resonance, some type of a humming or some type of a singing that they did. I don't know, I could be messing that up, but I know that it's there in the scripture that there was some type of unified sound happening or being produced by the stars. That's how in tune everything was. There. It is, thank you, ryan While the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy. You know, this is God telling Job, telling Job, where were you when this was happening? I was doing all this stuff before you even were a thought.
Speaker 1:So this type of thing, man? Yeah, there it is. On what were its foundations set? Or who laid its cornerstone? While the morning stars sang together? Yeah, that's what it was. This just goes to show you that God has a plan for creation as well. He had a plan from the beginning, and if we only knew just how in tune he wanted everything to be and how in tune everything was before the fall of man, it would blow your mind. It would blow your mind. And so, david, this idea of redemption, this idea that there will come a time when those things will be restored to harmony, will be restored to their original state again. That's a beautiful thing, man.
Speaker 2:And that takes us right back to where we are in Romans 8, where it's guiding us or coming up upon this concept of the hope that we have.
Speaker 1:Yes, absolutely, that we have, yes, absolutely. And so it says uh in verse 23, and we believers also grown uh even though everybody's making noise, everybody's crying everybody, man, it's like we're all longing for this.
Speaker 1:We believers also grown, even though we have the holy spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory Boy. That's a whole other topic there, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including. Now here's the kicker, including the new bodies he has promised us. Goodness, gracious, alive dude.
Speaker 1:Now if you wonder what kind of new body that is that we're talking about, it is a redeemed body.
Speaker 1:Now, this is something that's on God's calendar that is going to happen, calendar that is going to happen For every believer in Christ.
Speaker 1:You have this promise that one day, your body is going to be redeemed, physically manifested as a brand new body.
Speaker 1:Now, there's a lot of scripture to support this idea of the redemption of the body in the New Testament, but one of the things I wanted to point out was that Jesus himself demonstrated what that new body would look like, or how it would function after his resurrection, because it talked about how he came into the room where the disciples were while the door was still shut, and it shows his ability to teleport, if you want to call it that, on the road to Emmaus, his ability to teleport, if you want to call it that, like on the road to Emmaus, when he, uh was, appeared to the disciples, there was a couple of them walking and talking about everything that happened, and he talked with him for a little bit and then it said, right at the point where they recognized him, he was gone. You know, and it's like, and and I do believe that he's, he showed that as well with uh walking on the water, having total dominion over physical matter, total dominion.
Speaker 2:And I think you just said something really important there, philip that part of or what makes this new body that God gives us so great is. It's a body that has dominion, yes, over all physical matter.
Speaker 1:Come on now.
Speaker 2:That's it I think that's it, and I think it's a body also has dominion over all physical matter. Come on now, that's it. I think that's it, and I think it's a body also. You can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's a body that also has dominion over time and space.
Speaker 1:Yes, I 100% believe that. I believe we'll be able to travel at the speed of thought with this body that we'll have. There's a whole lot of other stuff that we can get into with this man.
Speaker 1:I'm going to try to keep it on theme here, but let's just suffice it to say that this body will not be limited by the physical constraints like we are now. It won't be limited by time, space, gravity, matter, nothing. It will be a higher order of matter, if you want to put it that way. So back in Romans 8, I know we've been jumping all over the place that's the new body he's promised us, and it says we were given this hope when we were saved. If we already have something, we don't need to hope for it. Right, that makes sense. But if we look forward to something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently. And so he's saying that this body has, this redeemed body has been promised to us and we have, if you want to call it a down payment to prove that it's going to happen, because he gave us his spirit. Who lives in us. That's the down payment.
Speaker 1:In Ephesians 1, it calls the Holy Spirit the earnest of our inheritance. It's like earnest money on a real estate deal. The same kind of thing In verse 26,. It says and the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, for example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. A lot of times we're not perfect in that regard, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
Speaker 2:You know, philip, can I just jump in there, right there, please? I want to give you a different bridge statement, because I struggled with if you'll pull that back up, ryan I struggled with the jump from 25 to 26. Because I'm like, did we just start a new subject? What just happened?
Speaker 3:Right right.
Speaker 2:And some translations may have it this way, but the way that you should maybe think about it. It says but if we look forward to something we do not yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently. In the meanwhile, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.
Speaker 3:So in other words.
Speaker 2:It's saying that here's the expectation for us to patiently and confidently wait for. But now remember, we are still not in our glorified bodies yet. We're still not changed. We're still living in this first body, where we are still having to resist sin where we're still having to be led by the Spirit of God to know what the right thing is, what the wrong thing is. And he's saying the Holy Spirit. In the meanwhile, while you're still in this body, the Holy Spirit will help you in your weakness.
Speaker 1:That's good man, wow, wow.
Speaker 2:And then take you, for example. We don't know what God wants us to pray for. Have you ever sat in prayer and wondered what you should pray for? You know, you have your list. I'm going to pray for my mama. I'm going to pray for my daddy. I'm going to pray for the kids. I'm going to pray for the wife. I'm going to pray for their families. You know, I'm going to pray for Israel. I'm going to pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ. But I'm going to pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ. But have you ever stopped and thought about what is it that God wants you to pray for? Yeah, so the scripture is saying we don't always know how we ought to pray, but then bring that back up. For us, ryan, what we can count on is, with the help that we have in the meanwhile, is the Holy Spirit, who prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words, or the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
Speaker 2:So, in other words, we've got an intercessor helping, coming alongside of us, and as he's interceding, he's also, I believe, whispering in our ear and we hear what to pray for. We know what to pray for because he's whispering. We've got to help her, and the Holy Spirit, that's what he was designed to do. And so the Holy Spirit is helping us by interceding. And then it goes on to say and the Father, who knows all hearts, knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers, in harmony with God's own will.
Speaker 1:Goodness.
Speaker 2:That's a mouthful.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, wow. There's so much I'm trying to say right now.
Speaker 2:I love Get it all out and then pick one yeah.
Speaker 1:I think in verse 28 kind of helps to kind of put the icing on the cake with this. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Now, when you take that verse in light of what came before it, it makes a whole lot of sense. He's saying we're groaning because creation wants to be redeemed. God's working on that part. We're having to wait patiently and confidently. The Holy Spirit's going to help us, he's going to pray through us and then the Father, who knows all hearts, he's helping us too, because the Spirit's pleading for us and for other believers too. In harmony with God's, will All this stuff together. We know God.
Speaker 1:Verse 28, god causes everything to work together. It's not and I'm about to maybe tip over a sacred cow here Tip it, tip it. It's not this out of context idea that tragedies, horrible crap, people dying of cancer, this, that and the other all things work together for the good. People use that verse to try to excuse away horrible stuff happening, saying that's part of the all things God's talking about here. It's not. If you read it in context, he tells you what the all things are. He tells you what these things are that are working together. It has nothing to do with anything tragic or horrible happening to any person. It has to do with all the stuff that was mentioned before verse 28 got here.
Speaker 2:Right. That's why you have to be so careful with how you hear people interpret the Scripture.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:The other thing that I've also heard is that it's all things of intercessory prayer. Yeah, working together for your good yeah, working together for your good yeah and that leaves a woeful bit out, yeah, of what he included in working together for our good. But I just, I like I know I'm being, you know, just very surface here. I love the concept that God is working everything together for my good.
Speaker 2:Yes, because that teaches me something. There's a learning opportunity here and we get to learn something about God, and it's that God does not have ill will towards me.
Speaker 1:Come on man, come on man.
Speaker 2:How can God have ill will towards me, while he's also working things together for my good, that's?
Speaker 3:good man Wow.
Speaker 2:Those are contradictory thoughts that are in the minds and thoughts of men. We'll think one minute God doesn't love me, and then something great will happen. God loves me, he just works things together for my good, and something bad will happen and you'll be like oh dang, he hates me, and that's just you in your mind. That's you in your flesh. But, God is working things together for my good, which means he's thinking about me. Then you go back to the Scripture, where it talks about how I'm the apple of his eye and how he's always thinking of me and ways to do me good, to make me happy.
Speaker 2:It's a beautiful thing about God. Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you.
Speaker 1:No, no, no interruption man, jeremiah 29, 11,. Same thing he's like. I know the thoughts I think towards you. They're thoughts of peace, not of evil, not of calamity, not of misfortune. They're thoughts of peace towards you to bring you to a good and expected end. This is how God thinks towards us. And he even said in Isaiah 54, for those who still think God might be mad at him, he said just like the waters of Noah are no more going to go over the earth, so have I sworn that I'll never be angry with you, nor rebuke you? This is coming straight from God, isaiah 54.
Speaker 1:So we got to reconcile these things and say okay, I might feel a certain way, you know I might feel like God's mad at me, but which thing carries more weight? Is it what I feel or is it what God actually said in his word? Because, trust me, man, especially if you've done something that you know you shouldn't have done, or you slipped up and fell into sin, or whatever, you're going to have those feelings. It's going to be like oh man, gosh, why does God even fool with me? All this stuff goes through your head. He can't possibly love someone like me, or whatever it is. That might be how you feel, but that's when you have to learn how to separate your feelings from the truth of his word and you want to base your thoughts, your decisions, your mindset on the things that he said in his word, not on how you feel, because, trust me, those feelings will change from moment to moment sometimes. So put it on something stable, not on something unstable.
Speaker 2:That's good, philip. We're going to have to put a bookmark in it right there. That's our moment. We made some pretty good progress, though we are going to. It's the holiday season, so we're going to going to. It's the holiday season, so we're going to. We're going to do one more week and then we're going to take a couple of weeks off for Christmas and then get back to it, and so we're pushing to get this part of Romans done with you, so you'll have that to chew on and consider over the holiday season.

Speaker 1:Yes, sir, father, thank you for just everything that you brought out during this podcast. We're grateful, father. We're grateful for the Holy Spirit and for His help. We know that we cannot do anything without him, just like you said in John 15, apart from him, we can do nothing. So, lord, thank you for the help of the Holy Spirit. You said in Romans 8 that he is there to help us in our weaknesses. He's there to help us in the times when we don't feel like we're strong enough to overcome temptation or wise enough to know what to do next, that he's there as our guide and our leader. We thank you for the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 1:I pray that, for every person listening to this podcast or looking at this podcast, I pray that they will sense the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives, that they'll sense His direction more than they ever have before, his leading, his instruction, his comfort. Because, jesus, you said that when you went away, you would send us a comforter, and you did. You sent us the Holy Spirit to help us in every area that we're weak. And so, father, I thank you for just making your Spirit's presence very known, very felt, very evident in the lives of those who are listening to this podcast, father, that they would know that you're with them, that they would never have a doubt that what you said in Matthew that you'll be with us always, even to the end of the age that they would feel that in their hearts and in their minds. Father, we just give you praise for that. We thank you for working in each of us to will and do of your good pleasure, and we give you praise for all these things in Jesus name, amen.
Speaker 2:Amen, amen. You can live above sin, you can break the cycle of sin in your lives and, as you see who you are in Christ and recognize just how highly he's called you and recognize you that he's also equipped you so that you can win, you really can make the choice to win all the time. All right, that's it for now. I'm David, he's Phillip and we are out of here. Peace.
