How often do you consider the profound impact of your thoughts on your daily life and spiritual well-being? In this episode of Bible, Bros, and Brew, we wrap up our enriching thought life series by exploring the heart-mind-mouth connection through biblical study and thought-provoking discussion. We set the stage with a cozy coffee chat, sharing our favorite brews and inviting you to join the conversation. From there, we dive into the wisdom of Proverbs 4:20-23, emphasizing the importance of attentively listening to wise words and keeping them close to our hearts. Here are some highlights of the discussion:

Phillip draws a fascinating parallel to the parable of the sower from Mark 4, enriching our understanding of how spiritual truths can be practically applied in our lives.

Our guest, Ryan Holdeman, contributes valuable perspectives on the significance of speaking positively over our lives. We reflect on the pervasive nature of negative influences and the importance of nurturing a positive thought life.

David wraps up the discussion by urging vigilance in aligning our thoughts and actions with God's kingdom.

With insights from Colossians 3 and personal anecdotes, we emphasize the power of positive self-talk and its transformative impact on our lives. Speaker 1:

Hey everybody and welcome to this episode of Bible Bros and Brew. I'm David and, of course, with me today is Phillip, and we have got with us our tub-thumping friend.

Speaker 2:

Ryan.

Speaker 1:

If you've never heard of tub-thumping, just go and look for the song.

Speaker 2:

I feel like that's more of an insult.

Speaker 1:

No, I was about to say because you get knocked down but you get up again.

Speaker 2:

Okay, good, thank you. Tub thumping sounds like I eat tubs of butter.

Speaker 1:

No, but if you do have a personal confession you'd like to make, now is the time.

Speaker 3:

Oh man.

Speaker 1:

Hey, we're getting together to finish our conversation around the subject of our thought life. We've been talking about what to think, what we shouldn't be worried or anxious about, and we started digging into strongholds last week. But this week we're going to talk about the heart-mind connection. We mentioned it in episode one. Now we're going to bring it home as we wrap up this particular series. Up next on Bible Bros and Bros. Hey everybody, I am David. Once again, thanks for joining us. We're actually really, really glad you're here with us. We've been enjoying our conversation with you and we hope that it's been meaningful and impactful in your life as well. I've got the fellows with me today and we're going to talk a little bit about the mind-heart connection, but before we do, we always want to talk about what we're drinking, because we're just nosy and want to know what's going on in somebody else's cup. So I'm actually going to start with Ryan this time. Ryan, what are you drinking?

Speaker 2:

I got the old Pikes. This is the Dark Roast, the Major Dickinson's Roast in the. Peterbilt mug yes, sir.

Speaker 1:

How about you, Phillip?

Speaker 3:

I'm going to highlight Dark Skies from Peregrine. A dark roast with campfire, s'more caramel and roasted peanut notes. It's an excellent coffee. Sorry I'm being so dramatic, but yes, it's an excellent coffee. I feel like.

Speaker 2:

I'm ready for fall now.

Speaker 3:

Yes, yes, that's like all the ingredients of fall in one cup. That's great. And also the Charlie Brown mug I had to highlight that too Nice, how about?

Speaker 1:

you Dan.

Speaker 3:

What's going on in your cup, sir?

Speaker 1:

I am thrilled to first of all announce that over the last week or so I have been making coffee purchases from around the country.

Speaker 3:

Yes, sir.

Speaker 1:

Because it is fall and it's time to switch gears in my fall coffee drinking. But for tonight, just keeping it simple, I've got a half-calf from Green Mountain.

Speaker 3:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

Keeping it very simple, very low-key, Very simple. I've got a half calf from Green Mountain. Yes, Keeping it very simple, very low key, Because we're shooting a little later tonight than we normally do anyway. Right, I still wanted to be able to sleep after we're done. All right, that's what's in our cup. What's in your cup, by the way? You can share it in the comment section here and tell us what you're drinking. We'd love to hear from you and find some. Maybe you'll give us a new coffee to take a dip into. So we're looking forward to that.

Speaker 1:

All right, fellas, as promised, we said we were going to talk about this heart, mind, mouth connection and when we looked at this from back in the first episode of this new season, I think we were looking at this, Proverbs, chapter 4, and in Proverbs, chapter 4, looking at verse 22-33,. I want to just take a look at it. It says keep your heart with all diligence. Well, I'm actually going to, I'm going to pull it up over here really quickly. It says Proverbs 20 says my son, attend to my words and climb thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from before your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart for their life unto those that find them and health. And so we see in these scriptures you know, there is this, there's a connection here where David tells us, he instructs us to attend to my or I think it's Solomon actually to attend to, or pay attention to my words. In other words, listen, Incline your ear unto my sayings. So it's not just a listen, but it's a listen closely, with intent, Listen closely with an intent to hear and understand what I'm saying. And then he goes on. So we've talked about the ear. He then says let them not depart from thine eyes. Isn't that an interesting thing, To not let his words depart from before his eyes.

Speaker 1:

So in one sense, we clearly have to be talking about the words that are written down, which I know well.

Speaker 1:

I can't say I know, but I feel very comfortable and confident in saying I'm sure Solomon would have written things down, yeah, and made them available for all to read, but particularly for David. And then he goes on in that verse 21 and says keep them, my words, in the midst of thine heart. So in one sense, we can't be talking about the actual physical heart here, right? So we're talking about man in two parts spiritual man and physical man and we're talking about the heart of spiritual man and he's telling him to keep his words inside his heart, the center of his being, the center of his existence. And why? Because their life unto those that find them and health to all their flesh. So we see, the eyes are involved, the mouth is involved and we see the heart, the mouth, the eyes and the heart are all involved in this process of hearing, comprehending and understanding. Phil, when you hear all that and just dallying that about a little bit, what comes to mind for you?

Speaker 3:

It's interesting that the first thing that kind of popped in my head is that he's showing us the system of the parable of the sower from Mark 4. It's the same thing, it's Jesus.

Speaker 3:

When he said, you know, the sower sows the word. And he mentions that the place where the word is sown is in the heart. He said, you know, these are they that are by the wayside where the word sown. You know, when they heard it, satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. So he named the place where the ground is located and that is in the heart of man. And we're not talking about the physical organ I think everybody understands that by now, I'm sure. But we're talking about. We call it well, not necessarily we call it this, but the heart is a combination of the spirit and the soul, it's the thinking faculties, it's also the spiritual element of who we are, just like 1 Thessalonians 5.23 says it says you know, it names the three parts of man the spirit, soul and body. You know Paul said I pray that your spirit, soul and body are preserved blameless. So in that verse. And so when we think about what Jesus means when he says that the word being sown in your heart, he's talking about it's being sown into your inner man, being sown into your mind, your thinking faculties and into your spirit itself. Because the word is, for all intents and purposes it's spiritual seed. It even says that in First Peter I think it is it says that we're born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible seed by the word of God that lives and abides forever.

Speaker 3:

So it's interesting that Jesus made that analogy, or made that comparison that the word is just like a seed, and if you think about the way seeds function once they're sown and God's just too cool to do this but once they're sown it's like a program, it has everything already in it. All it needs is to be put into the right environment and then the soil begins to work on that thing. It cracks it open and the seed just knows what to do. It begins to grow out a little sprout or whatever.

Speaker 3:

Finally, above the surface of the ground, the word is the same way in our hearts it's already got it's like a macro in the computing world it's got a whole bunch of stuff packed into a little space. And so when we sow the word in our heart, it's already programmed to produce the fruit that the word says it will. And so sowing that word in our hearts, by reading it, by speaking, those are the actions that help you sow. And hearing the word, obviously and I think Ryan's going to cover that in a minute but doing that will cause that word to begin to produce the life that's already been compacted into it that God pre-programmed it with. So and I know I'm kind of I may be jumping all over the place with my description here but yeah, it's the system that God already ordained that not only works physically for farming but it works spiritually for us harvesting fruit from the word itself.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you said something interesting, Phil, that I don't want us to overlook, and it is that the word, or the seed. Remember the Bible tells us, the word is the seed.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

And the seed is the word.

Speaker 3:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

And that the seed has life in it, and so we have to realize that when we're taking in God's word, we are literally taking in life. That's good man we're taking in life and health and well-being unto ourselves. Ryan, what stands out for you as we kind of pass this first volley?

Speaker 2:

You know, in verse 20 of Proverbs 4, it says in some translations it says you know, pay attention or incline your ear. And I think you know, as we conclude this series on your thought life, I guess the natural conclusion would be the question of well, how do I know a good thought versus a bad thought and how do I know how can I manage my thoughts, which is what we pretty much covered last week. But this idea of now you, the wording, the word incline your ear means to like, literally like. You know, when you were a kid and you were putting your ear to the you know your parents' door to listen to what they were saying about the Christmas gifts and where they were hidden, you had to be intentional to put your ear to something. You had to be intentional to be quiet, you had to be intentional to block out all the other sounds in the house and in your surrounding, to hear what's on the other side of that door. And I think that's what this Proverbs is teaching us is that you have to be intentional about what you are listening to, you have to be intentional about what you are seeing, you have to be intentional about what you are taking in, and so it's not just you know, I think, so often in life people will passively go by in life and then they look up and they have the thought and the question of how in the world did I get here?

Speaker 2:

Life like? You know what David and Phil are saying. Let it be life to you to begin, to take a, an account and incline your ear to the wisdom of the things that you're taking in. So, um to to. I guess what I'm trying to say is you know, with your thought, life, you have to be absolutely intentional about what you're taking in, because this is how thoughts start, and I think that's kind of it's odd to end uh at the beginning, but that's the funny way the Bible works. Um, it's circular, circular, cool, that's not a word. Um, cyclical, thanks, david. Um is that, in order to understand where a thought begins, it begins with what you see, with what you hear, with what you're intaking. That's good.

Speaker 1:

That's really good. Were you about to say something, Philip? I'm sorry.

Speaker 3:

No, I was just saying that I like that, like that description. So yeah, but David, I'm going to interrupt you there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, you're right. It's interesting to kind of wrap up at the end with the beginning. We teased the beginning at the beginning and then here we are getting ready to pay it off. You know, it's one of the words that I've heard us say over and over again. Is this word intentional?

Speaker 1:

And it's been the word that we've been using throughout this whole kind of discussion around this concept of our thought life, and if there's one thing that I, if I, could encourage you on it, is the concept of being intentional about your thought life, right.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

You're never going to get your thought life under control passively.

Speaker 3:

No sir, no sir.

Speaker 1:

It's going to take you some intentional time working on it and even having good intentional I said something ugly about myself earlier just tonight and Phillip and Ryan did not did not get a good hearty laugh off of it and it realized it made me think that wasn't funny and you should have never said that about yourself wasn't funny and you should have never said that about yourself.

Speaker 1:

So I have learned a quick lesson tonight that even when other people are helping you, you got to be quick to stamp down stupidity. That you know if you're there's some people who are wired like I am, and you just sometimes say stupid stuff because it's funny and you want to get the laugh out of the room and all of that good stuff. But it's like you even have to be careful about that. Yeah, you know, because you can say the wrong stupid stuff. Yeah, yeah, and it not be it not be a good thing for you to say about yourself. It's not a good thing to say about other people. It just takes a level of intent. Would you all agree with me? Yes, 100%.

Speaker 3:

It's interesting, the word intentional comes from intend and it just means what you set your mind to do, basically. And so it's not like you said, david, it's not anything passive. And I think about the scripture in colossians 3 I was just reading it earlier today, actually I think about it. Um, it says you know, set your affection on things above not on things that are on the earth.

Speaker 3:

and one translation says set your mind and keep it set on the things that are above. And so in another translation I think it's maybe the Williams translation it says practice setting your mind on the things that are above. So it basically acknowledges that it is something that you have to intentionally practice. It's not something that's going to fall on you out of heaven or anything like that. You know you have to make effort, and I can't remember what episode we were on, but there was some episode recently where we were talking about you know, most of the things in the kingdom of God are not for the passive person, they're not for the person who's just, you know, willing to sit around and wait for something to happen to them instead of going to make something happen.

Speaker 3:

And you think of scriptures like follow after charity, pursue righteousness, different things. It always talks about you being the person to initiate and take that initiative to do something. And I think that, god, I don't want to ever say you got to be careful saying what God requires quote, unquote, because we know that grace is there for a lot of things, but I do believe that when it comes to sowing the word, when it comes to activating the word in your life. There is, it's a it's required of you to make the effort to put it into your eyes, put it into your ears, keep it coming out. In your life there is, it's a it's required of you to make the effort to put it into your eyes, put it into your ears, keep it coming out of your mouth. I think that's our job. It's almost like a spiritual farming kind of thing that we have to do you know A hundred percent and I, you know, I would say it's.

Speaker 2:

you know what was talked about earlier in the series. You have to be transformed by the renewing of your mind and I think we have to make a. I had to do this, especially when I was in ministry. School is I had to make a conscious observation and know that I grew up passively learning. You know, when you grow up, you know in our culture, when you go through the education system, it's your spoon fed everything you need to know and you're even it's even criticized even more now today than when I was in school. Yeah, if you criticize what you're learning and you go against that, then you're a bad person and you fail.

Speaker 2:

You know, you're setting yourself up in the spotlight to be the failure of the class because you're going against the narrative or the agenda. And so we're taught not to critically think and just passively accept whatever comes in, whatever comes in through our teachers, whatever comes in through the television, whatever comes in through social media and the internet. And and then whatever comes in is the right thing, because the they are the authoritative thing and even this podcast.

Speaker 2:

And so you know one scripture. I love the scripture and this is kind of what really transformed my thinking is first John, chapter four. It says beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirit to see whether they are from God, from false prophets that have gone out into the world, and so, even right there, you just have to be careful, because somebody can be presenting themselves as God, as a prophet or an oracle of God, but maybe at one time they were maybe at one time they were speaking the truth and they were of God and they were close to God and and and really honed in.

Speaker 2:

But then they've manipulated it for their own self gain somewhere along the way and they've gone out into the world, and so we have I, I, I, you know. Back to what you were saying. Phil is like a. You know the grace of God. I think this is to me. I read this as like beloved brother. This is a command. You have a command to test every spirit. And how do you test it? You take what you hear. Thank you for saying that. Now let me put that against the word of God.

Speaker 3:

That's good man.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's really good Reminds me of 1 Peter 13, where it tells us to gird up the loins of our minds.

Speaker 3:

Yes, yes.

Speaker 1:

The New Living translation of that I pulled it up over here says prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control.

Speaker 3:

Come on man.

Speaker 1:

And so what both of you are saying, it really is not just, it's not even just intent. It's intent and then it's vigilance.

Speaker 2:

Come on, man yes.

Speaker 1:

That's what we're all talking about. We're talking about being vigilant. That's why you're reading that from 1 John. It's funny, I'm getting ready to go into that and I've just finished reading 2 Peter 1-3. And what's he teaching us about? He's teaching us about the false prophets and how to discern the false from the true, and it really is this Christian life. And how to discern the false from the true and it really is this Christian life requires us to be vigilant not only in our action, but in our thought life.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

We have to have a vigilant thought life. Remember what Peter says. He says, for your enemy roars about Like a lion, seeking whom he may devour. So there's a couple of tips in there. He's not a lion, it says. He roars like a lion, come on now and then what is he doing? He's seeking whom he may devour. So in other words, he's in search of weakness, goodness man, and looking for the opportunity to take someone out. And so if we're not vigilant over our thought lives, we could present ourselves as a potential candidate.

Speaker 3:

Come on man.

Speaker 1:

Take an opportunity to attack. So we have to be intentional. If we have our word, one is intentional.

Speaker 2:

Word two is vigilant, sorry yeah. Here and to me this is why it's so vital to be vigilant is because of the wisdom we get in Romans 10, 17. When it says faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the good news about Christ. To me, faith is a heart belief, meaning I don't have to see it, touch it, smell it. I believe it to be true.

Speaker 2:

But faith comes from hearing, and I think it's so interesting that hearing means I hear it in my my. My ears are on my head and my head is my brain. And so if faith comes through hearing into my thought life and then for at some point it transfers from my thought life down to my heart and to me, I've always said that that's kind of the the, the transition of how we get to faith. It starts with a thought, and I think you have to be vigilant of your thoughts, because if they can get into your thoughts and they can get into your heart, and if they get into your heart it becomes a vital part of your life. And then we see the truth in Matthew, chapter 12, when Jesus gives us the wisdom. He calls them a broad of vipers and he says out of the abundance of your heart, your mouth speaks and have you ever caught yourself saying something and you're like, ah, where did that even come from?

Speaker 2:

Um, it comes from your heart, because it came into your ear, into your heart, into your mind, and then it made it transformed and digested into your heart and then, all of a sudden, you spoke it. That's why, when I was a youth pastor, kids all the time we'd be playing a game and then they would get upset and they would cuss or something.

Speaker 2:

And because I knew this truth, I never got mad, because I knew they were just talking out of the abundance of their heart and I didn't want them to change who they were from, you know, when we were at on a Wednesday night playing on the football field, to when they were playing football on a Friday night at high school. I wanted them to be the same, no matter what. And because I knew, out of the abundance of the heart they were, they were speaking, I didn't, I didn't condemn them. I instead privately prayed for them that they would change. And so, if you understand this truth that your thoughts begin by hearing and then they go in your mind and they digest in your heart and then they become a part of your life, that's why what David is saying and what Phil is saying are so vital you have to be vigilant against what becomes thought, because it will become a part of your life.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and look again, that's where it takes us back to Proverbs, where it tells us, out of the heart, flow the forces of life. The forces of life are the life-shaping forces that come and notice. Here's the other thing that's amazing, and it kind of goes back to Ecclesiastes a little bit, where it says there's a time and a season for everything a time for this, a time for that, a time for seed time, a time for harvest.

Speaker 1:

I mean, there's always. Harvest is not exclusive to the Jews or the Gentiles. It's up for whoever will plant seed, nourish the seed and bring it to a full head. And we have to realize the same thing. It's that when we're sitting up here and we're planting these seeds and all that stuff, it's just going to grow. And eventually, what we find out is what's in there.

Speaker 1:

And that's so important that it's just like Ryan said, as a youth pastor. You're sitting out there and all you're thinking is you've been teaching all this amazing word and then you hear Frank, frank, frank, frank, frank, literally. I did not teach those words.

Speaker 3:

Right right.

Speaker 1:

But then you can kind of like a little bit like Lot, you know it says that his righteous soul was vexed by the conversations he was daily around. Come on, and these kids are in school. They're hearing other kids doing it. So you know, it's at least coming in their ears. That's right, yeah, and so it's inevitable that if they're not vigilant about it and so we think about stuff so casually, Like we think about cussing, Literally, you guys we're cussed at all the time.

Speaker 3:

It's true, yeah, from every direction.

Speaker 1:

Every direction. You try to watch a simple little video and you blink, blink. You're not even trying to hear it, but we're literally vexed daily and we have to be on guard, so that what our response is, isn't, you know, instead of craps and giggles, all of a sudden you say the S word and then you're like oh, wait a minute, I didn't mean to say that, but did you know, man.

Speaker 3:

Even in the self-help section at barnes and noble you get assaulted by all kinds of titles.

Speaker 3:

You know it's like get your effing life together. You know that's the name of every book on the on the thing. But um, it's just, the new thing is to cuss to get your point across with, uh, the personal development world, I guess. But anyway, that's my little side rant.

Speaker 3:

I did want to say something back when you guys were talking about what's coming out of your heart, showing up in your life, and this question kind of came to my mind while you were talking how much of what's in you are you now seeing around you? And I thought about that because in a big way not with everything, not with everything, but in a big way what you see around you is a reflection of what's been in you. And I thought about one time I went to visit this guy who was in pretty bad shape, just mentally, spiritually, in every kind of a way, and he lived in a trailer. And I walked into this trailer, dude, and I'm telling you it was completely just nasty, okay, from floor to ceiling. He had cigarette butts in the carpet, old newspapers scattered every which way, food just here and there and everywhere. You could hardly see a clear spot on the floor. It was clutter everywhere. And I remember thinking to some degree the environment that he's put himself in is a reflection of what's been going on in him.

Speaker 1:

Inside of him.

Speaker 3:

yeah, and we got to be, and I think about that even with you hear these classic stories about like the person who's a hoarder. You know they keep all the stuff you know from like 20 years ago. They have power bills from 20 years ago they won't let go of and things like that. It's like that's actually to some degree a reflection of what's in them. It's a fear they're dealing with, the fear of letting go of things or whatever it might be.

Speaker 3:

In different ways, we do show on the outside some of what's on the inside of us and I think that bears witness with what Jesus said in Matthew 12, when he said a good man out of the good treasure of the heart will bring forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. And he was mainly in that verse talking about what's coming out of our mouth brings forth evil things. And he was mainly in that verse talking about what's coming out of our mouth. But there's also that application just in general. It's like if you've loaded yourself up with junk just junk going through your mind, junk coming through your ears, junk coming out of your mouth eventually it's going to show as some level of junk in your life.

Speaker 3:

You know it's hard. It's hard to constantly consume trash and put out something good, and I think about that even with, maybe, certain types of music we listen to or certain types of entertainment we expose ourselves to. It's like, man, you know. Some people say, oh, it's harmless, it's no big deal. But if I'm listening to a song 10 times a day, that's talking about slapping my hoe, selling drugs, shooting this dude over here. You know what I mean. It's like you can't load your mind with junk and expect to have clear thinking based on God's word at the same time. Man, that's just my humble opinion. I could be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

Speaker 1:

No, I don't think you are, because the evidence says you're not. Just look out there. We have trials right now for rappers who are out shooting one another. We find out in these trials they've shot up this place, they've shot up that place there was a guy.

Speaker 3:

I'm sorry, man, you made me think of something.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, go ahead, phil Go.

Speaker 3:

I forgot the guy's name. He was kind of a local hip-hop dude. He came out with a song called Murder on my Mind. He ended up going to jail for murdering two people and I'm like, well, I wonder how that could have possibly happened Right when I was like, if people think there's no connection, that blows me away. I'm like you can't constantly be saying and thinking murder on my mind and then you're going to be doing okay, you're going to be this upstanding citizen.

Speaker 1:

You know what I mean and you just look at it in the lives of people in general. What girl feels bad about herself but gets all dressed up? At some point she begins to dress terribly or at least below herself. Because she doesn't feel good about who she is, she covers, she tries to hide.

Speaker 1:

Not just girls, but guys do that too. It's just easier for guys to do it because you know they're expected to be a little sloppier than girls are. But just, there's so many areas of our lives that we can see this and we can see it manifested in fear.

Speaker 1:

Why is it that you won't let your kids go outside and play? That's what's going on in here a lot of times. It's not just because you. It's not because you live in south central right, right, you know you. You live in, you're living in a suburb in atlanta, georgia, and you've got a playground right next to your house. Why can't your kids go outside and play with you? You know, there's just so much there's there's so much that we open the door for yeah yeah, and we open that door through our thought life.

Speaker 1:

What were you about to say, ryan?

Speaker 2:

oh no, I, I completely agree. Yeah, I think it's. I just, you know, always think it's so interesting that people and people, we all, we all do. We try to justify what we like, you know, and, as a youth pastor, if I had a dollar for every time I heard, I listened to it for the beat.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

I could have retired by now. You know what I mean.

Speaker 1:

I need to go ahead and give you a dollar now, because I've said that as a grown man. I did too, man, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just the beat. I like that beat man.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and you know, yeah, but I think there's a lot of there's, there's a lot of power in what we give creed to and what we listen to. Um, and you know we can we could probably, david, do a whole series on on this but, like you think there's a reason why that beat is so good, I mean, and why it's so enticing and why it's so hooky, you know what I mean Like, and that's a whole nother rabbit trail.

Speaker 2:

We can go down some other time, but there's probably a reason for it and and I'll just go back to first John four, you need to test every. Don't just do it because I'm saying or some preacher saying it, you know, you need to test every spirit and and to go back to that, you need to test it for yourself. Yeah to that. You need to test it for yourself. And that's not to say this new agey teaching of your truth. No, no, no. You need to take the scriptures and you need to test it and be convicted for yourself.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Right, that's good, I love that.

Speaker 1:

That's really good and then hopefully help somebody else who doesn't quite see it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, you know that's a great um this. Okay, I was debating whether or not to bring this up but, um, you might have to just cut this out. So feel free to cut this out. Uh, totally, uh. But.

Speaker 2:

But you said you know teaching somebody else, in that in, in, when you have to think about communicating what you know and believe to somebody else, it really one, it solidifies it for yourself, but also makes you think critically and it really makes you think, like all of the different questions that could come up when who you're teaching gives doubt and this is the part you might have to cut out is that I was watching Instagram reels or whatever, and this she was maybe like 12 or 13.

Speaker 2:

A really young girl was filming her mom, but her mom didn't know. She kind of had the phone low and you couldn't see anybody's face, but you could hear the conversation and her mom is like, oh, she's asking her daughter oh, have you heard of the Hoptua girl? And the daughter's acting like she didn't, but obviously she did. She has TikTok and all the rest of it and the mom is having to explain it and then, as the mom is explaining it, about halfway through the explanation, the mom's kind of realizing what she's explaining to her daughter and it gets very awkward. And then the mom kind of like trails off and like tries to change the subject. And then the mom kind of like trails off and like tries to change the subject. But I was like that's kind of a good example of like how one how I can't think of a better word other than numb to our culture that we've become and just so accepting of just and I don't know I'm probably not a believer, but but just how we've just become so accepting and numb to our culture.

Speaker 2:

But the fact that the mom had to explain what it was, and she started explaining it before she thought about it. This to her middle school or elementary school daughter made her really look inward, and so that's what I would encourage you to do and I think that's why Jesus calls us to be witnesses is so that you don't just internalize it and then hold it to yourself, but you think critically about everything in your life.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely. Maybe that explains then how the scripture says over and over not over and over again, but a couple of places where it says that the Pharisees and Sadducees knew that they had been with Jesus because there was some critical thinking that had happened in their lives that began to change and shape how they saw things and what they were saying to others.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Gentlemen, we're going to put the final bookmark for this particular portion right here. And Ryan, no, I don't think we have to cut that out. We started with Jesus, but we ended with the hawk to a girl, oh God. And we have nok to a girl, oh gosh. And we have no explanation. No, I'm just kidding. Let's go ahead and wrap up, as you think back over what the episodes we've talked about and everything, what are your final thoughts? I'll start with you, philip. What are your final thoughts?

Speaker 3:

Well, just in terms of the heart, mind, mouth connection, what we say and what we think on and what we meditate on does matter, and I think we should not. We need to train our minds to never take it lightly.

Speaker 3:

You know, it's easy to do, especially if you have a PhD in sarcasm, as I do to sometimes you know, have you can lightly esteem the words that you say you know, but you really you know, when it comes down to it.

Speaker 3:

Try to practice not speaking negative or wrong things over your own life or over the people that you love's lives, because your words do have weight, they do have power and instead of you know speaking things that are, either, you know, from fear or from doubt, or from discouragement or whatever else it is you know, find the scriptures that address all those things and instead start speaking those things over your life, like Second Timothy one seven. God's not giving me a spirit of fear, but power, love and a sound mind. That's a whole lot better than I'm scared to death of you know, dogs or whatever. You know what I mean and that kind of thing is. It's a process of training your mind to begin to think differently, based on the basis of the scripture, not just on a whim, but on the basis of what the word says. So a little thought there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's good. That's good Ryan.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I guess my final encouragement is, you know, just like what Phil was saying is just being, you know, remember to incline your ear, so being mindful of what you're listening to, and and so because, remember, your life begins with a thought, and a thought begins with a sound that's coming into your ear, and so just begin taking an account of and being cognizant of everything that we're taking in.

Speaker 1:

I think if I would wrap up, I would start us at the beginning and work us through. Remember to think of those things that are good and pure and perfect, lovely, just true and honest. That's a David McIntyre translation. I didn't get it perfect, perfect, lovely, just true and honest.

Speaker 2:

That's a David.

Speaker 1:

McIntyre translation I didn't get it perfect Things that are of good report if they bring anything praiseworthy. Think on these things. Don't be anxious or worried about things like how you're going to eat, how you're going to live, how you're going to clothe yourself, because your heavenly father knows that you have need of those things, and if he knows you have need of those things, he'll provide for you. And then stand guard and be vigilant. Be vigilant and intentional over what's going on in your thought life, what you're letting go in your eyes, what you're letting go in your ears and what's going in and out of your mouth, because ultimately you're shaping your life with those pathways. So be wise how you use them and use them for your benefit. Remember, it's not about us, it's about glorifying God's kingdom. Brian, I'm going to ask you to pray, if you will. Will you pray for everybody as we walk away from this and start Not start, but Continue on the process Of putting God first and being intentional and vigilant about the things Of God?

Speaker 2:

Heavenly Father, I thank you For our time here together. And, god, I first just ask For your forgiveness. Forgive us for when we haven't put you first. Forgive me for when I put myself first, when I put my desires first, when I manipulated situations to get my own way. Forgive me, forgive us, lord. Now I pray God for everyone listening. Now I pray God for, for everyone listening.

Speaker 2:

In the name of Jesus, I pray first that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you would, you would sort it out and make it crystal clear what is a, what is a thought from our heavenly father. And we're what we're ingesting. In the name of Jesus, I pray that we would become spiritually cognizant like never before. In the name of Jesus, I pray God, that we would, we would begin to have a supernatural Holy spirit ability to test every spirit and God, when we put the spirit to the test, god, you would show us the results of that test, whether it's from you or not.

Speaker 2:

In the name of Jesus. And I pray God that as we do this and we become a deal, we become diligent in this task and we do it over and over again. I thank you, god, that our love of the spirit. And I pray God that that would be our goal, that we would be spirit-filled Christians, not for our own gain, not so people would look at us, but God, so that we may bring life to those that are around us In Jesus' name. Amen, amen, amen. People would look at us, but God so that we may bring life to those that are around us in Jesus name Amen.

Speaker 1:

Amen.

Speaker 3:

Amen.
